Frequently Used Dental Tools

healthyofteeth77: Whether you’re visiting the dentist for a routine checkup, teeth cleaning, or cosmetic procedure, there are specialized tools that are used to get the job done. The reason that some of the tools look unusual is because of the nature of teeth and gums, and the angles required by the dentist to reach and probe inside your mouth.

Just imagine trying to access the nooks and crannies of every tooth in someone’s mouth while they are laying down and you’re sitting over them. It can be challenging sometimes.

But there is also a benefit to patients. Because dental tools aren’t clunky like they were in the past, it means your experience will be much more pleasant and comfortable.

And in case you’re wondering, all dental tools are thoroughly sterilized under strict guidelines and protocols before they are used on you. With that said, here is a quick overview of five of the most common dental tools.

Mouth Mirror – As mentioned earlier, it can be difficult to see certain areas of your mouth and teeth with the naked eye without being a contortionist. So a dental mirror provides a reflective surface that allows the dentist to check for damage and decay behind teeth, especially those toward the back of the mouth.

Dental Explorer – If you look at your teeth in the mirror, you probably won’t be able to spot any damage unless it shows up as a discoloration. A dentist is trained to spot damage more easily than you, but there can be hidden problems. A dental explorer is a metal instrument that has a long handle with a very sharp point or sickle at the end. The dentist will probe around the top of your teeth to identify soft spots. If any are found, this is sign of a new cavity or other damage that is in need of attention.

Excavator – When a dentist uncovers decay on your tooth, he needs a way to remove it. This is where a dental excavator comes in handy. Just like the explorer, it has a long metal handle, but the end of it looks like a tiny little spoon. This allows the dentist to get into narrow spaces to scrape and scoop out decay.

Dental Scaler – The intent behind getting your teeth cleaned is to remove plaque and hardened tartar that have built up on your teeth above and below the gum line. The dental scaler actually looks similar to the dental explorer with it’s sickle shaped end. But the sickle of the scaler has been further sharpened and refined so that it can more easily scrape away tartar deposits.

Suction Machine – Whether you’re visiting the dentist for a routine teeth cleaning or oral surgery, chances are you’ll be required to keep your mouth opened for long periods of time. That can make it difficult to swallow. That’s why the dentist will put a suction tube at the edge of your mouth. So as saliva and water build up, the suction machine will continuously remove it.

Plus it’s not healthy to swallow blood and other debris that may be in the mix.

So there you have five basic tools that are used by nearly every dentist. Naturally, there are many more that can be employed to help when performing surgeries or other dental procedures.

But what you should know is that while these dental tools may look like they were designed for torture, their real purpose is to help the dentist work more efficiently. This also means that procedures will be completed with a higher degree of quality and less discomfort for you.

If you’re looking a quality dentist, I hope you keep the Coral Springs dental pros in mind.
